Adopt-A-Stream
As part of the Georgia and Cobb County Adopt-a-Stream Programs, MIC has adopted Nickajack Creek from Buckner Road to the Chattahoochee River. This means that on a regular basis, we will clean up the creek by removing trash and debris from the banks and the area nearby. Not only will this improve the health of our waterways, but it's a great way for more Mabletonians to get to know the beauty of our woodlands and streams.
Clean-ups will be announced in the monthly MIC newsletters and posted on our home page. General information and guidelines are as follows:
Beginning Location: Veteran’s Memorial Highway -
Nickajack Creek Bridge at Henderson Road
Parking: Publix Shopping Center parking lot on Veteran’s Memorial (Please walk down to Henderson Road ). Please park near the red light where there are no businesses currently in operation.
End Location: Discovery Blvd. Nickajack Creek Bridge.
Please think ahead of how to get back to your vehicle at
the Publix Shopping Center . It may be a good idea to
park one at the Publix Shopping Center and one at the
vacant location of former tenant The Granite Shop
located at 1340 Discovery Industrial Court. You may
also walk back up the creek or take surface
sidewalks/paths back to the beginning location.
What to wear:
High-topped work boots with non-skid soles
Hat or scarf for sun protection
Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt (Extra protection against poison ivy and ticks). Please tuck pants into boots or tie the bottoms. You may also bring insect repellant, sunscreen and a water bottle. Cobb County will provide as many gloves, trash pokers, trash bags and safety vest as they can. If you want to bring your own, it is encouraged. Tip: you can make a trash poker by partially inserting a nail into the end of a wooden dowel or broomstick handle and then cut the head of the nail off.
Each participant will be required to sign a volunteer agreement form prior to the clean-up and a signed parental consent form for volunteers under 18 years of age.
We have T-shirts available in limited quantities for volunteers. The t-shirts will be distributed first come, first serve at the clean-up.
The clean-up leader will be at the beginning location starting at 7:30am.
We look forward to seeing as many volunteers as possible as we participate in our first clean-up of a major watershed in the Mableton area.
