Lifelong Mableton Has Arrived!
The Atlanta Regional
Commission (ARC) is kicking off Lifelong Mableton - an effort to
recreate Mableton as a healthy place to live
for all ages. This partnership with Mableton residents is funded by a
federal grant and is one of only 13 grants awarded
nationwide. Lifelong Mableton will promote housing and
transportation options, encourage healthy living, and expand access
to services.
Over the next 3 years, the ARC will work with Mableton stakeholders to plan and
focus on creating a place where individuals of all ages can live
throughout their lifetime. The ARC opened the LLM (the
abbreviation for Lifelong Mableton) office at the South Cobb Government Center on Austell Road in March. The ARC,
along with the community's residents and leaders, will host a
"Lifelong Mableton Kick-off" planned for late
spring. Watch this newsletter for details.
Meanwhile, program coordinator, Cheryl Mayerik,
welcomes everyone to learn more about LLM by contacting her via email or 404-463-3125 or visiting the new
office, 4700 Austell Road in
Austell.

A key focus of the Atlanta
Regional Commission's Lifelong Community Grant is Health and
Wellness. One of the first programs to be implemented will be
a walking club in downtown Mableton. The goal is to
promote exercise while fostering friendships and involvement in the
community. In order to do this, we must first conduct a
walking assessment of the area this spring. If you are
interested in helping with this initiative, please contact Cheryl Mayerik,
Lifelong Mableton Initiative Coordinator.

There are three new zoning
cases in Mableton.
At 367 Veterans Memorial Highway
(LUP-9), the day care center is asking permission for a modular
classroom on the site and for a variance to allow fewer parking
spaces than the county requires. MIC met with the owner, and
will remain neutral on this case, which will be heard by the Planning
Commission on April 6.
At the corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and
Henderson Road (Z-11), an event facility is
proposed, which requires a change from residential to commercial
zoning. MIC is concerned about the look of the building and the
lack of planned parking. This parcel is surrounded on two
sides by County-owned parkland. The case will be postponed
until the May 4 Planning Commission hearing.
At the Board of
Commissioners' zoning hearing on April 20, a hearing will be
held on a site plan amendment for the property on the corner of the
East West
Connector and Hicks Road that adjoins the Barnes Mill subdivision.
A developer wants to amend the site plan to allow a Publix grocery store, a bank, and other retail
space. This site is part of Barnes Mill, a mixed-use
neighborhood, and it significantly changes the plan
for this neighborhood. MIC is working with
the Barnes Mill HOA and the applicant to address concerns regarding
traffic, landscaping, architecture and the scope of the changes.

MIC is a non-profit,
tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(4)
of the tax law. We want to explore our options for becoming
or establishing an offshoot of MIC that would be a 501(c)(3) organization, which we believe would help
us attract donations and grants.
If you have legal or
accounting expertise in this area, and would be willing to talk
with us about this, please contact Robin
Meyer, Board Chair or Ben Clopper, MIC President.
