Dear Robin,
One
of the most interesting topics at the weeklong Mableton Design
Workshop in June was the new Mableton Elementary School. The
Cobb County School District has committed to building a school that
is, in their words, "unique, architecturally interesting, and
a great starting point for the Mableton revitalization."
The School District plans to hold two public forums this fall and
winter at the existing school in order to keep the community
updated and provide opportunities for feedback. They expect
to break ground on the new school in the spring of 2011.
Mableton Elementary School is important to the community in so
many ways. We are looking forward to an impressive new
building that will help foster a brighter future for the school.
Regards,
Ben Clopper
MIC President

Adopt-A-Mile
Clean-up on Floyd Road
Join
other Mabletonians on Saturday morning, August 7 at 8:30am for our
quarterly litter pick-up on Floyd Road. Meet us in the
Westside Bank parking lot (on the corner of the Publix shopping
center at Nickajack and Floyd Roads) with gloves and sturdy
shoes or boots, and we'll provide the bags, vests, and cold water!
It
takes less than an hour to clean up our mile from Hicks Road to Clay Road, and the whole town looks better for it.
Click here for more information or call Dave
McDaniel at 404 323-0608.
If
you're interested in adopting a mile in another part of Mableton, we can help you get started with Keep Cobb Beautiful. Contact Dave McDaniel at
404 343-0608 or via email.

several races in the July 20 Primary election, no candidate
received a majority of the votes cast. Georgia law requires a run-off and that is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10.

Lifelong Mableton Committee Forming
To
make certain that older Mableton residents have a voice in
designing a community that meets the needs of all its residents
throughout their lifetime, Lifelong Mableton is creating a Citizens
Steering Committee of individuals who live in Mableton and are
"older adults." Many of the activities and projects
will be formed and implemented at this level. This committee will
likely meet quarterly, through September 2012.
If
you interested in serving on the Committee, contact Cheryl Mayerik
at 404-463-3125 or by email.

Walking Club
Kick-off in September
It's
hot, right? So the Walking Club startup will be
postponed until the weather cools off. The
plan is to offer different routes on various days of the week and
at different times of the day. Members will be encouraged to
track their mileage and will have the opportunity to earn
incentives for participation.
For more information regarding the Mableton Walking Club, please
contact Dennis Hayes or Cheryl
Mayerik.

Zoning News
Glock
Manufacturing wants to expand its current
manufacturing operations off Highlands Parkway in Smryna
and is seeking variances from the City of Smyrna to allow them to
build in stream buffers and pipe the creek on their property.
MIC does not usually get involved in land use issues outside 30126,
but the Board voted to oppose these variances because the streams
affected feed into Nickajack Creek, which runs through the Historic
River Line Area in Mableton. Increased stormwater runoff from
this property will enter Nickajack Creek north of Vinings Estates,
travel past Whitefield Academy, Nickajack Park and the Johnstons
Crossing and Graystone subdivisions. Nickajack Park, Johnstons Crossing and Graystone have suffered from flooding in recent years, and it is
feared that this development will make the problem worse.
The neighborhoods in Smryna have other issues with the variences;
more information is available at their website.
