Happy Holidays!

For the third year, MIC is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Mableton for our Secret Santa program.  The Boys and Girls Club provides MIC with a list of children and items that they wish for this holiday season.  We then distribute the names and wish lists to great people like you in the Mableton community who want to help brighten a child's Christmas.

Gifts are needed during the week of December 14, so please contact Steve Reents today.

The target expenditure is $40 to $50 per child, but if you'd like to help at a lower level, contact Steve; we can use your donations at any level.  If shopping is not your thing, we can do that for you - click here to contribute online.

Check out our website for more details.

Thanks in advance for your support of this great project.  I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends.

Regards,
Ben Clopper
MIC President

Mable's Tea Room -- Help Needed!

The Christmas Arts and Crafts Sale at the Mable House Arts Center is a long-standing tradition in Mableton, along with Mable's Tea Room.  The Tea Room, open only during the Christmas House sale, offers soups, salads, sandwiches and homemade desserts in a fun setting.

The South Cobb Arts Alliance partners with
Mableton nonprofit groups to make the Tea Room beneficial to all.  This year, MIC has committed to staffing the Tea Room for one day, Friday, December 11.  Thanks to all of you who have volunteered!

However, we still need 5 volunteers to serve food and work in the kitchen, one cake and one batch of soup.

So, if you can help by volunteering from
10:30am to 2:30pm, or by making a cake or some soup, please contact Rob Meglaughlin.  No prior restaurant experience is required - just a smiling face and some holiday spirit!!

In exchange for our donations of time, soup and cake, we will raise nearly $250 for MIC!

Christmas Events at the Mable House

necklaceFor the 25th year, the South Cobb Arts Alliance presents the Christmas House Arts and Crafts Show at the Mable House Arts Center from December 4-13.  Vendors from all over the East Coast will bring their very best to our town for a great local shopping experience.  Check out these photos!

While you are there, check out the Tea Room for lunch.  New menu items and real china tea pots make this a "must do".  Also new this year is a Mommy & Me (or Daddy & Me) Tea Party on Sunday, December 6.  Reservations are encouraged.

Santa returns for the Candy Cane Hunt on Saturday December 5th from
10am to noon.  For music lovers, the holiday concert series is back, with comedian Jim Karwisch, violinist Brooke Alford, and singer Joanna Maddox.

The SCAA newsletter has more details on all these activities.

Bring One for the Chipper!

MIC has teamed up with Keep Cobb Beautiful to operate a first-ever Christmas tree recycling operation in Mableton.  The location will be Lions Park, 620 Lions Club Drive, behind the old Zoom Car Wash on Veterans Memorial Highway, east of Floyd Road.  Mark your calendars for January 9, 2010.  (Please note this is a change from the one published in the last newsletter.)

Volunteers will be there to unload your cut trees between 8:30am - 4:00pm and hand out tree seedlings as long as supplies last.  If you need to, you can drop your tree off any day between December 26 and January 8.

Tell your neighbors about this opportunity for a convenient and eco-friendly event.  If you are a senior citizen or are disabled and anticipate having a problem delivering your tree, send us an email or call 404-323-0608 to schedule a pickup.

Public Meeting on Veterans Memorial Plan

Cobb County and the City of Atlanta joined forces to obtain a Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission for Veterans Memorial Highway in Cobb County and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in Atlanta.  In Cobb, the study area begins at Buckner Road and runs to the Chattachoochee River.

The first public meeting will be at
6:30pm on Tuesday, December 8th at Harmony Leland Elementary School at 5891 Dodgen Road in Mableton.  Everyone interested in this part of Mableton should plan to attend.

The purpose of the study is to develop strategies to encourage redevelopment into vibrant mixed-use centers; to strengthen existing industrial uses; to provide opportunities for housing, services, amenities and jobs; to improve mobility within the corridor and to minimize potential land use conflict with industrial uses and truck traffic.

More information can be found on the MIC
website.  Questions?  Contact Laraine Vance at the Cobb Department of Transportation.

Downtown Mableton Planning Grant

Historic Downtown Mableton will be the focus of a Lifelong Communities Grant to the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC).  Although the study is sparked by the growth in the senior population, the focus is on developing community plans that allow all age groups to access transportation, housing, healthy lifestyles and services.

This grant is a continuation of the charrette hosted by ARC last year, which was reflected in the updated Historic Mableton LCI Plan recently adopted by the County.  The grant is just kicking off, so we'll share more details as we get them.

SCAA logoThe South Cobb Arts Alliance was recognized last month when it was selected to receive the Ovation Award for the Arts Organization in Cobb County!!  Way to go SCAA!!

South Cobb Dance Team at the Sugar Bowl

Congratulations to the South Cobb Dance Team!  They have been selected to perform at the Sugar Bowl on January 1, 2010.  The cost of making the trip is over $17,000, so community support is needed, especially in light of the impact of the recent flooding in this area.

Among other fundraising efforts, the Team is presenting a preview of their show on Monday, December 7th.  Please contact
Stephanie Valentine if you would like to attend.  Donations are also welcome; please email Kimberly Snell, the Dance Team coach.

Parks Update

On November 18th, the Board of Commissioners placed a 90-day hold on the entire Parks Bond program while they "review the bond financing".  County revenues are down, due to the lagging economy, and the bond interest must be paid from those revenues.  29 properties were recommended by the Citizens Advisory Committee for purchase; two of them are in Mableton.

The larger property is a 64-acre parcel on the southeast corner of the East West Connector and
Fontaine Road, running east to Cooper Lake Road.  Heavily wooded with a large pond, this property connects to Heritage Park on its west side and touches Thompson Park on the south.  The Silver Comet trail is just across the East West Connector and the site currently provides some parking for the trail.

The other
Mableton property on the list is located off Buckner Road adjacent to Nickajack Park.  This 20-acre parcel includes federal army trenches and rifle pits from the Civil War as well as streams, steep slopes and several creeks running into Nickajack Creek.  The huge trees on the parcel and the history of the area will combine to make this a great passive park.

Neither the Floyd/Hicks/Concord Road property nor the Chattahoochee Greenway made the list of recommended parcels. MIC will continue to advocate for these potential parks.
