Greetings!

Happy New Year!

MIC's new year is also underway, so it's time to renew your membership or join for the first time.  Annual dues are $5.00 per person.  With your financial support, MIC has accomplished a lot, and attracted $70,000 in grant funds over the last three years.  Those grant monies, though, are for specific projects; we need your support to cover the subscription fees for this newsletter and our website, marketing materials and some minor administrative costs.  Click here to join or renew online or print and mail the form.

Our Annual Community Meeting will be coming in March, and members will cast ballots in our Board of Directors' election.  Click here to learn more about serving on the Board, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

During this past year, we carried out more volunteer projects than ever before:  4 Adopt A Mile clean-ups on Floyd Road, 1 Nickajack Creek clean-up, adopting the Mable House Tea Room for a day, our Secret Santa program with the Boys and Girls Club, and (in January), provided the volunteer force for Bring One for the Chipper here in Mableton.  If you haven't joined us in one of these projects, make it a priority now to be a part of the fun in 2010.  It's a good feeling to make a difference and it's a great chance to meet new friends.

I hope the coming year is a good one for you, your family and friends, and that we see you at a MIC meeting or event soon!

Regards,
Ben Clopper
MIC President

Chipper LogoBring One for the Chipper!

MIC has teamed up with Keep Cobb Beautiful for the first-ever Christmas tree recycling operation in Mableton.  The location will be Lions Park, 620 Lions Club Drive, behind the old Zoom Car Wash on Veterans Memorial Highway, east of Floyd Road.

On January 9 between 8:30am and 4:00pm, volunteers will unload your trees and hand out tree seedlings as long as supplies last.  You can also drop your tree off between December 26 and January 8.

Tell your neighbors about this opportunity for a convenient and eco-friendly event.  If you are a senior citizen or are disabled and anticipate having a problem delivering your tree, send us an email or call 404-323-0608 to schedule a pickup.

Concert for Flood Relief

Memories of the September 2009 tragic flooding along Sweetwater Creek in the Austell area are still fresh in the minds of thousands of our neighbors.  Many families and businesses remain displaced.

To raise funds and awareness for the rebuilding effort, Thirst Aid Live, in partnership with Trinity Chapel and UNITE will host a free benefit concert "Restoration" featuring several well-known artists who are donating their time.  The concert will be at the Trinity Chapel, Powder Springs, starting at 7pm on January 21.   In addition to the free performances, there will be a silent auction and numerous opportunities to make tax-deductible donations to support the recovery effort headed up by
Cobb Disaster Recovery, coalition of faith-based organizations, non-profits, businesses, local government and civic groups.

Click here for more information about the concert, organizers and how you can help support the recovery effort.

Public Meeting on Veterans Memorial Plan

Cobb County and the City of Atlanta are jointly administering a Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) planning grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission for Veterans Memorial Highway in Cobb County and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in Atlanta.  In Cobb, the study area begins at Buckner Road and runs to the Chattachoochee River.

The public is invited to a design charrette on January 9 from 10am to 3pm at the Word of God Ministries church at 3120 Hollowell Parkway in Atlanta.  A charrette is a collaborative session in which participants provide their ideas for the challenge at hand - in this case, the redevelopment of the corridor to accommodate existing and new uses, and improve housing, services, amenities and transportation.  Everyone interested in this part of Mableton should plan to attend.

  • A study of possible adaptive re-uses of the Hooper -Turner House;
  • A grantwriting and fundraising consultant;
  • The required $5,000 match for the $45,000 National Park Service grant for battlefield preservation; and
  • Equipment, including a projector for public meetings.

Comprehensive Plan Amendments

The signs are up announcing public hearings on proposed changes to the County's Comprehensive Plan for the Historic Mableton area and for the Johnston's River Line area.  These changes track the recently adopted Historic Mableton Plan and the River Line Master Plan.  The amendments also add a map to the plan that shows the flight paths into Cobb County from Fulton County airport.  Click here to read the amendments.

These changes will be considered by the Planning Commission on January 6 at 7pm and by the Board of Commissioners on Jan 19 at 9am.  Both meetings will be held at 100 Cherokee St. just off the square in Marietta.

The Comprehensive Plan guides the County's land use decisions and lays out projects and tasks for the planning and economic development staff.
