Greetings, All!

It's election year, so it's time to Meet the Candidates!  MIC will again host a Candidate Forum to give you an opportunity to hear from the candidates, ask questions and learn their view on important issues.  New this year is our partnership with the Austell Community Task Force, our co-sponsor for this event.  The Candidate Forum will be June 22 at 7pm at the South Cobb Community Center on Lions Club Drive.

The primary election will be held on July 20.  That day will also serve as a special election for a new
Cobb County Commission Chairman, since Sam Olens stepped down to pursue a state level office.  This is the "top job" in the county, so be sure to come and hear from the two candidates vying for this position -- Tim Lee and Larry Savage.

Please make plans now to attend the Candidates Forum.  It is so important to our community that all the candidates see that
Mableton residents are active, involved and concerned about our community.

After brief opening remarks, we'll put your questions to the candidates.  To contribute a question, click here.  Be sure to tell me which candidates your question is for:  County Commission Chairman, School Board Member, or State Legislators.

Regards,

Ben Clopper
MIC President

The Candidates Forum will include candidates for the following positions:

  • Chairman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners
  • Cobb County School Board, Post 2
  • State Senate, Districts 6 and 33
  • State House, Districts 33, 34, 39, and 44

Hooper-Turner House Feasibility Study

For more information on this project, contact Dobson Harris.

Veterans/Hollowell Corridor Study in Draft

Cobb County and the City of Atlanta joined together to study the Veterans Memorial Highway and Hollowell Parkway corridor. The draft study is now available.

The study aimed to develop strategies to encourage redevelopment into mixed-use centers; to strengthen existing industrial uses; to provide opportunities for better housing, services, amenities and jobs; to improve mobility within the corridor; and to minimize potential land use conflict with industrial uses and truck traffic.

Specific recommendations are wide-ranging - from trails along the Chattahoochee River to traffic lights on Veterans Memorial Highway at Buckner and Riverview Roads.  Click here to read the draft study.

Zoning News

There are five new zoning cases in Mableton and one case continued from last month.  These six cases will be heard on Tuesday, June 1 at 9am:

  • At the corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and Henderson Road (Z-11), an event facility is proposed, which requires a change from residential to commercial zoning. MIC is concerned about the look of the building and the lack of planned parking.  This parcel is adjacent to County-owned parkland.

  • Westside Baptist Church on Floyd Road at Nickajack (Z-13) is asking for a change to commercial zoning, which would allow an electronic sign.  No other changes to the property are currently planned.  MIC is neutral on this application.

  • On the southwest corner of Mableton Parkway and Old Powder Springs Road (Z-16), the owner is asking for a zoning change to allow for light auto repair.

  • The Vision for Souls Outreach Center Church on Factory Shoals Road (LUP-19) is seeking a permanent renewal of their Land Use Permit for their child care center. MIC is neutral on this case.

Two applications have been withdrawn:  the proposed daycare center on the corner of Floyd and Concord Roads and the school on Kilrush Drive, just off Buckner Road
