Greetings!

I look forward to seeing all of you at MIC's Annual Community Meeting on March 2 at 7:00 pm at the South Cobb Community Center at 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton.  Each year, your Board of Directors reports to you on our accomplishments over the past year, our plans for the future, our budget and our finances.  This Annual Meeting includes the Board of Directors election -- your chance to choose MIC's leaders for the year ahead.

MIC membership is required to run for the Board and to vote in the election. Membership is only $5 per year per person!  Click here to pay online or print out the form for mailing.  You can also join at the meeting in March.

Come and bring a friend or neighbor.  It's a great opportunity to see how your community is growing and improving.  See you there!

Regards,

Ben Clopper

MIC Board of Directors Election -- March 2

MIC's Nominating Committee has recommended five candidates to fill seats on the Board of Directors.  The Board has 11 members, serving staggered two-year terms.  This year, six positions are up for election.  Five of the seats are for full two year terms; one seat is for the remaining one year of a two year term.

The candidates are:

  • Ben Clopper
  • Dobson Harris
  • Philippa Monthrope
  • Jolynn Sockwell
  • Janis Stevenson

There will be bios of each candidate available at the election on March 2.

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting MIC policy, managing its finances, and selecting officers.  MIC Board membership is a hands-on activity, with each Board member taking on specific roles in the organization.

Nominations are also accepted from the floor.

Remember, to vote in the election, you must be MIC member.  Click

Zoning News

Two new zoning cases will be heard by the Planning Commission in April.  MIC will contact the applicants to learn more about their plans before the hearing on April 5.

  • At the corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and Henderson Road (Z-11), an event facility is proposed, which requires a change from residential to commercial zoning.
  • At 367 Veterans Memorial Highway (LUP-9), the day care center is asking permission to place a modular classroom on the site.

In Feburary, two zoning cases were decided:

  • At 6174 Oakdale Road, in the Smyrna city limits, the City Council approved an application for commercial zoning.  MIC worked with nearby residents to gain stipulations that will improve the appearance of the property, and MIC remained neutral on this application.
  • On Vonda Lane, the Board of Commissioners approved an application (LUP-5) for a Personal Care Home with some restrictions.

CodeRED Emergency Notification System

Cobb County is launching an emergency notification system called CodeRED. Beginning on February 1, the system called every land line in the county encouraging people to register by visiting cobbcounty.org/911.  The system allows the County to contact targeted areas or the entire county to deliver important information during an emergency.

CodeRED will only be as effective as the telephone number database supporting it, so residents are strongly encouraged to add their home and mobile phone numbers. All businesses should register, as well as residents who have unlisted numbers, changed their phone numbers or addresses within the past year or those who use cell phones or VoIP phones as their primary numbers. It is important to register cell phone numbers as well. The information provided will only be used for emergency notification purposes.
