Greetings!

For several months now, we've been mentioning the Atlanta Regional Commission's (ARC) Lifelong Communities Grant for downtown Mableton.  Now the kickoff is officially here!  Please join ARC on Thursday, May 20 at the Mable House Arts Center from 6-8pm for more details on what the program is about and what is to come.

MIC is excited to be working with ARC and bringing another partner to the table to help revitalize downtown Mableton.  The grant was one of only 13 awarded nationwide, so we are very lucky to have this involvement for the next several years.

While the focus of Lifelong Communities is on the senior population, its core principles, including better pedestrian and transit access, social interaction, healthy living and expanded neighborhood retail and services, will benefit residents of all ages.  So please come out to the kickoff on May 20 to learn more about this exciting opportunity.

See you there!

Regards,

Ben Clopper
MIC President

Mableton Community Garden Joins MIC

Garden squashThe Mableton Community Garden has officially become a part of MIC!  Located in Nickajack Park off Oakdale Road, the spring planting season is well underway. A few small plots (5' X 10') may still be available at $35 each for the spring/summer growing season. If you are interested, contact the Garden here.

We will soon have a
Community Garden page on the MIC website and will keep visitors and newsletter readers apprised of happenings at the Garden.  The Mableton Community Garden was the first community garden in Cobb County, and is beginning its fourth season this year.  Garden managers don't foresee expansion in the immediate future, but together we will explore possibilities as they come about.

Adopt A Mile Clean-up on Saturday, May 22

The next Floyd Road Adopt-A-Mile cleanup will be Saturday, May 22, 8:30am. We'll start at the Westside Bank parking lot on the Nickajack Road side. This project will last no more than one hour.  Come and meet some neighbors and help spruce up one of the busiest parts of Mableton.  For more information, click here.

If you're interested in adopting a mile in another part of Mableton, we can help you get started with Keep Cobb Beautiful.

Health Fair for Seniors on May 11

Cobb County Senior Services will host Health Fair 2010 on Tuesday, May 11, at the C. Freeman Poole Senior Center, 4025 South Hurt Road in Smyrna just north of Mableton.  Admission is free and the event is open to the public, including seniors, caregivers, adult children and soon-to-be retirees. For more information, contact Shelia Perkins at 770-528-1445 or the center at 770-801-3400.

Keep Storm Drains Clear!

Cobb County is reminding residents that grass clippings, leaves and other garden waste must not be blown or raked into the street.  These materials will clog storm drains and potentially create hazardous conditions on our roads.

New Procedures for Tornado Warning Sirens

Cobb County has changed how it uses sirens to warn of tornados. Now, the sirens will only be sounded if a tornado has been spotted by a "trained storm spotter."  If the sirens are sounded, a tornado warning has been issued by the National Weather Service or a tornado has been spotted and residents should seek shelter. The entire siren system is tested at noon on the first Wednesday of every month. The sirens sound for 3-5 minutes. For more information, click here.

Annual Outdoor Burn Ban Returns May 1

Between May 1 and September 30, Cobb residents may not burn leaves, tree limbs or other yard waste. Click here for more information.

Zoning News

There are five new zoning cases in Mableton and one case continued from last month.  These six cases will be heard on Tuesday, May 4 at 9am:

  • At the corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and Henderson Road (Z-11), an event facility is proposed, which requires a change from residential to commercial zoning. MIC is concerned about the look of the building and the lack of planned parking.  This parcel is surrounded on two sides by County-owned parkland.

  • Westside Baptist Church on Floyd Road at Nickajack (Z-13) is asking for a change to commercial zoning, which would allow an electronic sign.  No other changes to the property are currently planned.

  • At the corner of Floyd and Concord Roads (Z-15), the owner of the home is asking for a change from residential to commercial zoning for a day care center.  The MIC Board voted to oppose this application because the land use plan and existing uses make this area inappropriate for commercial uses.

  • On the southwest corner of Mableton Parkway and Old Powder Springs Road (Z-16), the owner is asking for a zoning change to allow for light auto repair.  MIC will contact the applicant's attorney and learn more about the plans for this site.

  • The owners of a home on Kilrush Drive, just off Buckner Road, (LUP-15) are seeking approval for a school in their home.

  • The Vision for Souls Outreach Center Church on Factory Shoals Road (LUP-19) is seeking a permanent renewal of their Land Use Permit for their child care center.

Last month, two applications were finalized:

  • The expansion of Loving Hands Day Care At 367 Veterans Memorial Highway (LUP-9) was withdrawn.
  • The site plan amendment for the property on the corner of the East West Connector and Hicks Road that adjoins the Barnes Mill subdivision was approved.  A Publix and additional retail space is planned for this site.
