Greetings to All!
For
most of us, the highlight of November is Thanksgiving. This
year, let's think of it as "Thanks"
+ "Giving".
First, the Thanks
part. As Veterans Day approaches, let's all give thanks
to our veterans, and to the men and women now in uniform,
especially those in harm's way. Their sacrifices, and those
made by their families, are hard to imagine if you haven't been
there. Many service members won't be home for the holiday, so
if you can, reach out to them and their families with your support
and good wishes.
Second, the Giving
part. Now more than ever, our neighbors in Austell and the
surrounding area need our help. With the economic down-turn
and the devastating flood, Sweetwater
C.A.M.P. is hard-pressed to keep up with food and clothing
needs of area victims.
Their biggest need now is food and monetary donations.
Sweetwater can buy food from the Atlanta Community Food Bank for
pennies on the dollar.
Please consider sending a tax-deductible check to P.O.
Box 802, Austell, GA 30168 or
making an online credit card contribution by clicking here. If
you'd like to volunteer your time, call them
at 770-819-0662.
Thanks to you all for all your
good work in the community. MIC is committed to giving
you a better place to live, work and play!
Regards,
Ben Clopper
MIC President

River Line Master Plan Approved
On Tuesday, October 27, the
Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the River Line Master
Plan! After 18 months of discussion, meetings, drafts, and
more meetings, the Plan is now an official roadmap for the future
of this area.
This Master Plan is a direct result of MIC's advocacy. In
2007, MIC representatives met with County officials to talk about
their participation with MIC in a planning effort for the River
Line. MIC had just received a grant of $10,000 from The
Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. In the end, the
County's effort focused greater detail on a smaller area, and the
two studies were conducted separately. Click here to visit
the MIC website and learn more about both studies.
None of this could have been accomplished without your support -
hundreds of you turned out for meetings, signed petitions, made
phone calls, and came up with great ideas. Thanks also to
County Commission Chairman Sam Olens, District Commissioner Woody
Thompson, and the County staff, led by Dana Johnson, Planning
Director.

Park Land Purchase Recommendations
On Tuesday, the list of
properties recommended by the Citizens Advisory Committee was
released. These properties are expected to be the ones
considered for purchase under the 2008 Parks Bond issue.
Only two properties in Mableton are on the list. The
first is a 19 acre tract on Buckner Road adjacent to the Lindley Sixth Grade Academy and Nickajack Park. The second is 63
acres at Fontaine Road and the East-West
Connector.
MIC is very disappointed that neither the
Chattahoochee Greenway or Floyd/Hicks/Concord Park were
selected. We will continue to advocate for parks in these
areas, and in all of Mableton.
Much as we advocate for Mableton, though, it's important to
keep in mind that we all benefit by the preservation of greenspace and the creation of parks anywhere
in our County. Thanks to the voters for past bond issue
funding and to the County government for managing this important
program.

MIC's Economic Development
Committee needs Mableton residents for focus groups
to help shape our work in this area. In the next few days,
you will receive an email from MIC with a link to an online
survey. The survey will ask for some basic demographic
information. We will use this information only to make sure
we select a good cross section of Mableton citizens for the focus
groups. We will not share your information or use your
information in any other way.
The focus groups will allow us to gather valuable information and
opinions from you - residents of Mableton - so that we can learn
what things you might like to see in terms of businesses, eateries
and shops in this area. The survey takes only a few
minutes of your time and will be a valuable resource for MIC and Mableton development.
If you have questions about the survey, focus groups or the
Economic Development Committee's work, please contact Joel
Cope, Committee Chair. For more information about the Committee
and this project, please click here.

T-Mobile withdrew its
application for a taller cell tower on Mableton
Parkway behind the shopping center
between Lane Drive
and Gresham Road (SLUP-12). The
company already has permission for a 120 foot tall
tower. Click here to learn
more.
In
October, a variance was approved for a trucking company on Discovery
Boulevard
(Z-82). In exchange for permission
to put a 2 story building in the front setback, they company
agreed to limit nighttime maintenance work. Thanks to the
Legacy at the River Line homeowners for their help on this
case. Click here to learn
more.
An
application has been filed for a Land Use Permit (LUP-29) for a
daycare center on Graywood
Circle,
off Oakdale Road.
The case will be heard by the Planning Commission on November
3. MIC voted to remain neutral because of neighborhood
support. Click here to learn
more.
An
application was filed and then withdrawn for a restaurant on Floyd Road
(Z-35) next to Floyd Station subdivision. MIC opposed
this proposal because it would have brought commercial
development into a residential area. Click here for more
information.

Mable's Tea Room Fundraiser for MIC
The Christmas Arts and
Crafts Sale at the Mable House Arts Center is a long-standing
tradition in Mableton, along with Mable's Tea Room. The Tea Room, open only
during the Christmas House sale, offers soups, salads, sandwiches
and homemade desserts in a fun setting.
The South Cobb Arts Alliance partners with Mableton nonprofit groups to make
the Tea Room beneficial to all. This year, MIC has committed
to staffing the Tea Room for one day, Friday, December 11. We
will need eight volunteers to serve food and work in the
kitchen. We'll also need six homemade cakes and three batches
of soup. In exchange for our donations of time, soup and
cake, we'll raise nearly $250 for MIC!
So, if you can help by volunteering from 10:30am to 2:30pm, or by
making a cake or some soup, please contact Rob
Meglaughlin. No prior restaurant experience is required -
just a smiling face and some holiday spirit!!
