Greetings!

Over the past year we've asked all the residents of Mableton to take a more active role in our community.  Whether it has been attending River Line Master Plan meetings, our MIC community meetings and candidates forums, emailing our county commissioners regarding zonings, nominating park land or buying Christmas presents for the Boys and Girls Club--the response has been wonderful.  So thank you!  And please keep it up.

Below you'll find a link to a petition that MIC is supporting regarding a park nomination on Floyd Road and information about another River Line Master Plan meeting held by the County.  In coming months, we'll be kicking off new service opportunities including cleanup of Nickajack Creek through the Adopt-A-Stream program and labeling storm drains that feed into Nickajack Creek.  In addition we'll have another Adopt-A-Mile cleanup along Floyd Road in November and the annual toy drive for the Boys and Girls Club in December.

The point is this:  there are plenty of opportunities to be involved in your community and we hope you'll continue to lend your time to making Mableton a better place.

Regards,
Ben Clopper
MIC President

Petition for Floyd/Hicks/Concord Park

The County Parks Bond Citizens Advisory Committee is moving forward with selection of green space properties to purchase with the $40 million bond approved last year.

The Committee has narrowed the list from over 300 nominations to around 60.  Several properties in Mableton were nominated, including the land along the Chattahoochee called the Chattahoochee Greenway and the property between Floyd, Hicks and Concord Roads.

Apparently, the Floyd/Hicks/Concord property did not make the short list, but there is a small chance that it could be added back.  The location and nature of this property would make an excellent park, both for the nearby neighborhoods and the community as a whole.

A group of Mableton citizens has set up an online petition to ask the Citizens Advisory Committee and the Board of Commissioners to include it on the short list for purchase.  MIC is sponsoring the petition effort and if you agree, please sign the petition before the next Citizens Advisory Committee meeting on September 14th.  Ask your friends and neighbors to join in.

Cobb County's River Line Master Plan

Thanks to everyone who came out on August 26 for the last River Line Master Plan public meeting.

On September 14th, from 6pm to 8pm, the County will hold a River Line Master Plan open house at the South Cobb Community Center at 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton.  The meeting will provide the public with the opportunity to see the changes that the County has received from citizens and business owners and incorporated into the draft plan.  The County expects to post the revised draft plan to its website on September 11th, so that the public can review it before the meeting on the 14th.

The Planning Commission will meet on October 6th and is expected to consider passing the revised plan to the Board of Commissioners for approval.

County Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Plan

On September 16th, the Cobb Department of Transportation is hosting an open house on its new Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Plan here in Mableton.  The open house will run from 4pm to 7pm at the Library on Clay Road across from the Post Office.

The Plan will identify where Cobb County can improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians and identify strategies for investing in those improvements.

The DOT website has a wealth of documents related to the Study.  Come and see what improvements are projected for our community.

MIC Adopts Nickajack Creek

The MIC Board of Directors has voted to begin a Watershed Stewardship Program that will begin by focusing on streams in the southern end of the River Line Historic Area.  "Watershed Stewardship" is a lot of syllables with a very clear meaning -- to take care of the land and streams that feed into the Chattahoochee River.

We'll start by adopting Nickajack Creek (from Buckner Road to the River) as part of the County and State Adopt-a-Stream Programs.  On October 17th, as part of the Rivers Alive statewide clean-up, MIC will organize the first clean-up of Nickajack Creek.

Volunteers are needed!  Contact Dobson Harris if you can help.

Stay tuned for our next project -- Storm Drain Marking.  Do you know where your storm drain is?

MIC at the Metro Atlanta Neighborhood Summit

The Civic League for Regional Atlanta has invited MIC to participate in the 1st Annual Metro Atlanta Neighborhood Summit.  Dobson Harris, River Line Committee Chairman, will make a presentation about  MIC's involvement with the River Line Historic Area and Master Plan.  This is a great honor for MIC; congratulations to Dobson!

The organization with the most members attending the Summit will receive a $1,000 grant.  So, by attending the Summit, you can help MIC win this money for use in our community.  Click here to register to attend; be sure to put MIC's name in the Company/Organization space.

Cobb Police Department Meeting in South Cobb

On Thursday, September 17th at 7pm, the Cobb County Police Department will hold a meeting with residents and business owners as part of their PENS (Police Email Notification System) program.  The PENS program issues alerts and facilitates communication with the community on crime prevention and trends.

The meeting will be held at the South Cobb Government Center at 4700 Austell Road, between Clay Road and the East West Connector.  Click here for more information about PENS.

Zoning News

On the northwest corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and Buckner Road (Z-24), the County approved an application to allow a retail/office strip center and two out parcels. The final plan buffers the homes on Buckner, limits uses of the property, and will result in the demolition of the abandoned house across from Walgreens.  Click here for more information.

In October, the County will hold a hearing for a cell phone tower application filed by T-Mobile for a site on Mableton Parkway behind the shopping center between Lane Drive and Gresham Road (SLUP-12).  If approved, the tower would be 150 feet tall. Click here to learn more.
