Great news for the Buckner Road area – sidewalks on Buckner Road are coming! The Board of Commissioners recently approved funding for the project from the 2016 SPLOST funds. Sidewalks, curbs, gutters and drainage improvements will be constructed along Buckner Road from Veterans Memorial Highway to Kilrush Drive on the North/West side of the road and from Veterans Memorial Highway to Rosie Lane on the South/East side of the road. Engineering work will begin in the fall of 2018 and construction will start in the fall of 2019. Click here to see the plans.
The market will open June 7th and that is just around the corner. Market days will be Thursdays, 8:30am til 12:30pm at the Mable House Complex, 5239 Floyd Road. We’ll be doubling SNAP EBT transactions again this season. If you are growing fresh produce and want to sell at the market, click here for more information. All Market vendors must grow or produce what they sell. The 2018 Market is generously sponsored by John Thornton Chevrolet.

Mark your calendars for our Adopt-a-Mile cleanup Saturday, May 5th, starting promptly at 9:00am. We will meet in the Kroger Shopping Center parking lot area adjacent to the Autobell Car Wash on Floyd Road.
With your help, it takes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and your help will be greatly appreciated. Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide safety vests, latex gloves, trash bags, bottled water — and a cheerful welcome.
Participants must be at least 13 years of age and those under 18 must have a signed parental consent and release of liability. We have the form if needed.
Please contact Jeff Padgett if you plan to participate or if you have any questions/concerns. If we know you’re coming, we’ll keep you posted concerning rescheduling in case of inclement weather.
At the hearing this morning, both April cases before the Cobb County Planning Commission were postponed until May 1st. Punky Pooh, LLC (Z-3) is an application for townhouses next to the fire station on Mableton Parkway. The MIC Zoning Committee is hoping for more details on this project, so that we can better understand its impact on Glore Circle and how the buildings might best be placed on the property. Aziz Farista (Z-11) has applied for commercial zoning for the Old Bankhead Clinic at 1021 Veterans Memorial Highway SE. This property was mistakenly designated as residential years ago when the county adopted its zoning code. MIC has asked for additional conditions on any approval, in order improve the appearance of the property and to avoid certain uses, such as liquor stores, used tire sales, etc. For more information about these cases and other MIC Zoning Committee work, email us.
The HOA Network (HOAN) Board held its first community forum for HOA-governed and non-governed communities on March 1. It was a great start, with a standing room only crowd. Board members from 19 HOAs and several non-HOAs represented their neighborhoods to hear best practices on community safety. Special thanks to Major Stuart VanHoozer, Cobb County Precinct 2 Commander; and Louis Defense, Smyrna’s Public Information Officer, accompanying officers; and Flock Safety Systems, who gave outstanding presentations on what HOA’s can do to better monitor and protect their neighborhoods. Currently, we are working on building out the HOAN infrastructure, including website page and gathering resource information for you. Stay tuned for more to come soon! Questions? Email Ray Thomas.

The Marietta-Roswell Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a nonpartisan organization, will be at MIC’s Annual Meeting on March 26th to register new voters for the upcoming primary and general elections this year. If you are already registered, but have moved or changed your name, they can help with that too! Be sure to bring your government-issued ID.
Georgia’s Primary Election Day is Tuesday, May 22nd. Are you registered to vote? Our ability to select our leaders is the bedrock of our democracy – and YOU need to be a part of it. If you are not registered to vote – or if you have moved since you last voted – now is the time to register.
The election on May 22nd will be to choose the Democratic and Republican candidates for the General Election in November. In Mableton, there are multiple candidates from one party for School Board Post 2 (Susan Thayer is not running for re-election) and several legislative seats, too.
For more information about voter registration and the primary election, visit Cobb County Elections online.
On Monday, March 26 at 7pm the Mableton Improvement Coalition will hold its Annual Community Meeting at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton. The topic for the evening will be “Redeveloping Mableton’s Commercial Center”. Public officials and economic development experts will discuss the tools and trends for supporting existing businesses and attracting new business to Mableton. Residents, developers and business owners should plan to attend and bring their questions and ideas for Mableton’s business future. Also on the agenda will be the election of new Board members.
