South Cobb Litter Index Much Improved!

Aug 19, 2018 | Improvement, News, Volunteers

Barry Krebs, Mableton resident, Lions Club leader and “Mr. Adopt-A-Mile,” contacted MIC recently with the results of the Litter Index, conducted annually by Keep Cobb Beautiful.  Teams of Keep Cobb Beautiful employees, Cobb DOT employees and volunteers tour the roads of Cobb County and grades each road on litter, illegal signs,  bus stop conditions, sidewalk conditions, and graffiti.  The best rating is a 1 while the worst rating is a 4.  Below is the results of the 2018 Litter Index:

1.46        District 1 Commissioner Ott – Smyrna and East Cobb

1.57        District 4 Commissioner Cupid – Mableton, Austell, Powder Springs & parts of Marietta

1.63        District 3 Commissioner Birrell – Northeast and North Cobb

1.66        District 2 Commissioner Weatherford – West and Northwest Cobb

Cobb County overall was 1.58.

South Cobb has shown a dramatic improvement over the previous several years.  In 2015, the South Cobb Litter Index was 3.17.  So, in a short period of time, we have reduced our litter by 50%.  Barry credits the Adopt-A-Mile volunteers who have stepped up to clean up the litter in our area by adopting over thirty miles of roadways in the recent years.  It is because of these efforts that our community looks much better than we did in 2015.

MIC has adopted two stretches of Mableton roadways – Floyd Road from the Post Office to Hicks Road & all of Old Powder Springs Road. Our next clean up will be Saturday, October 13. More information here.

There are still opportunities to improve our litter situation – and maybe in 2019, District 4 will be the best in Cobb County!  If you, your homeowners’ association or your organization is interested in Adopting-A-Mile, please reach out to Keepcobbbeautiful@cobbcounty.org or call Dawn at 770-528-2504.  They provide all of the tools and training.
